"I've walked a mile in their shoes", thats what I tell my clients; but I follow that up with "but I survived and changed". I re-invented myself by returning to school and getting an education, eventually earning a Masters degree in Social Work with a concentration in Mental Health, Addiction and Leadership. My focus has been in women's issues and gender specific services in the area of mental health, PTSD, trauma,& addiction associated with partner abuse and sexual violence. I have over 20 years experience in the helping profession. I also teach classes in Human Services at Ivy Tech Community College and frequently have student interns learning skills to help them in their future careers. I have spent the last two years (in addition to volunteering at My Sister's Place), researching the fabric and textile industry and the many ways we can develop jobs for women that will pay them quite well and get them on their feet to self-reliance and independence. It can be a win/win situation for any one that wants to be a part of "something greater than themselves". Its an opportunity to learn something new, to reach out to others who need some mentoring and to also create value in a person who has been previously trampled. There is great potential to move this organization further along in its mission to serve the community while also freeing the landfills of harmful waste products.
